“Electroprogtechstep House” producer Fauré has dropped his third commercial release through LA boutique label Synth City Records. A two track electro banger, “Excessive Distractions” is a departure from the young producers usual big Progressive style, with a danceability and epic, groovy, electro house beat that fans, whether at the club or with headphones, are bound to love.

Q & A

Where do you live and how would you describe the scene there?

I live in Cairns, Queensland which is a smallish town up the north east coast of Australia, Best known for being a short boat ride from The Great Barrier Reef which is a fairly famous tourist attraction. The dance music scene is in a lot of aspects nearly non existent. We have the usual muscle head DJ’s that are just purely about playing “bangers bro!” and gaining the attention of being a DJ but for the music production side of things there is such a limited supply of producers in the club/ 4/4 dance music scene it’s embarrassing.

How has this influenced your style?

I guess it’s really let me do what ever I want as a producer, without a die hard dance music scene there is no scene to try and break into. I figure that takes some pressure off me and doesn’t force me to make one style or to have to adapt for an audience, it lets me make what I want with no pressure.

How would you describe your sound?

Looking back on my own sound it’s odd trying to define the music I make, sure it’s all pretty stock standard 4/4 beats but I guess I make what I want and don’t have too much of an issue chopping and changing all through the electro/ progressive house genre/ sub genre’s. Trying out little tricks found in Steve Duda/ BSOD tracks and then cutting into a new track with a huge chord progression and that flavour of the month kick and tom hit combo. I could really only describe my sound as an unbiased representation of what I love to make/ hear. If that’s to much to swallow we could just describe it as “Anything but Melbourne Bounce.” hahaha!

How did you come up with your name?

My original production name was originally Manil! for a couple years, This was what I’d decided on during high school when I was about 15 when I started to really like making dance music. Eventually I used that name a few times on a couple tracks I was doing with a couple people and I wanted to mentally split the tracks I was doing with people and the tracks I was doing by myself so I could make something exactly the way I wanted with no compromise and not have my 100% own tracks mixed with tracks I do with other producers on Soundcloud and eventually Beatport. Looking back at that it seriously makes me look like I have my head up my ass but it helped me learn and gave me the time to really work on MY sounds and develop my skills. So around that time I decided I needed a new name, I couldn’t think of a name for the life of me, eventually I’d caught on to something like “Foray” but I decided once it was written down on text it just didn’t look like a very cool name. I decided to figure out how to write the sounding of the word but to make it look a bit more interesting, I can’t remember how I found the spelling Fauré but I decided that having a European looking and sounding name in Australia would trick people into thinking I was actuallyfrench and that I was chic and cool.

Which would in turn mean a couple more hits on my sound cloud from my very image conscious town. What is your fav artists to listen to while driving?

As and extremely one dimensional person with no motivation outside of music I have not got my P plates yet (In Australia you have to drive and log 100 hours with an open licensed driver before you can get your Provisional license which lets you drive by yourself). So I ride a really nice bicycle. So my favourite artists to listen to whilst riding are Deadmau5, Steve Duda, Wolfgang Gartner and Chris Lake. Basically all those guys get me so excited while riding that I turn into one of those asshat cyclists and I just pedal as fast as I can weaving through traffic just letting the Kick and baselines give me that drive to get places fast.

Over the years what progression of dance music genres have you fallen in love with to bring you to where you are now?

In all honesty I only started listening to Dance music seriously about 3 years ago, I’d always played an instrument I played guitar for roughly 9 years. But as far as Dance music goes I think I’ve only experienced the downfall of it. I enjoy listening to tracks from a few years ago where every single track was different, I absolutely LOVE Basto – Storm Chaser and Chris Lake – Build Up, now realising that those two tracks are from Late 2012 maybe I’ve only really been listening to Dance music for a year! god I feel like a bad excuse for a dance music producer. That probably didn’t answer the question too well ha!

Who are your major influences?

In terms of supportive influences that’d definitely have to be my older brother Joshy! he’s always listening to the radio for cool ideas to try out and will tell me straight up if a song I’m working on sounds like shit or if it sounds good. The guy I’ll always keep around for Zac, he’s a total jerk (I work with him at a computer store) but he keeps me level headed, He’ll let me get excited and then nock me back to earth and tell me where I’ve messed up on a track and tell me how to fix it, he’s very handy to keep on deck. My mum and dad have impressed me by seriously helping me work at music. My dad bought be my set of CDJ 900’s and a DJM 350 after a few years of seeing this (music) is all I do. And my mum didn’t kick me out of home when I first started producing on a laptop hooked up to a home theatre system in her garden shed which helps haha! The last guy I look up to is my little secret, His name starts with an A and thats all you’ll get from me, he’s taught me a lot about the business and more about production, he’s my secret weapon. As for musical influences Mr. A has the knowledge to make anything and I respect that on an enormous level. One of the guys I produce with, The Doctor is the best DJ I know, absolutely great bloke and a killer knowledge of music and can throw down a set of any genre with the best of them. And then I’d have to say after those guys, Steve Duda, Wolfgang Gartner, Showtek (their new stuff, I’m no hardcore/ techno fan nor do I know the genres I just stated) and a couple other bigger guys but the people actively in my life are much more of an influence than any big DJ/ Producer.

How did you get into making music?

I was in high school aged 15ish and I went into a music room and saw an older guy making an electro song on his laptop. I saw that as a way of never having to listen to another damn lead guitarist again (I was in a band at the time) and to make my own music how I wanted and dove right in. My dad bought me a laptop for school which I instantly turned into my first production computer. I hooked up a pair of crappy sony computer speakers and went at it. About a year maybe less than that a decent sized cyclone (hurricane) hit the North East of Australia. The government issued $1000 to anyone aged 16 and over that went without power for more than 48 hours, I immediately dumped that money on a Midi Keyboard that I use to this day, my first D/A interface and a pair of Sennheiser HD 25s and got into it.

What do you use to make music?

My setup is comprised of a Quad Core Mac Mini running Ableton Suite 8. Running into a M-Audio Fast Track Pro (Buy my music so I can upgrade that D/A people) and then into a Pair of Dynaudio BM5A Monitors. I A/B against those and a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones which seem to translate pretty well to my monitors after a bit of learning. My Synths of Choice are Sylenth1 for very basic synth sounds e.g. huge chord progressions or like a low pass filter wobble and Massive for anything else. As far as Percussion goes I make all my kicks using a Sine Wave shaper and just lay a kick with all the bottom cut from it to give it a bit of dirty front to it and the rest of my percussion sounds are one shots. I never use presets or loops, I just have huge issues knowing that someone else has designed a sound or beat for me, it feels lazy. I never want to stop learning and using loops and presets (I’ll just say using presets and seeing how those presets actually make a particular sound is a great way to learn sound design) I feel would hinder the learning process and stop me from creating a song that is all mine.

What process do you go thru to make a track?

It really depends on the track, but usually I start by writing the breakdown chord progression. I never make my intro first always from the break. Finding the right chords helps me make the right drop etc. but for heavier stuff I tend to build a drum beat first and build from there. As for my mixing and mastering etc. I am a huge believer in fixing issues in the mix stage, I make everything sound as I want it as I make it. I have tried rushing a track thinking I’ll do a grand mix down at the end of the production session but I only find myself getting fed up and losing the whole track. This especially is important if you are sending tracks away to get mastered. All I have is a limiter pushing my tracks up couple dB so when I turn that off for the mastering engineer all I lose really is just volume. Nothing in my Master chain makes my tracks maybe some very slight compression and limiting but nothing extreme like laidback lukes “5 compressors on my master chain!” I feel if you need that amount of help on the end of your track you really never had a good solid mix. Short Answer: it’s totally dependant on the track and style I’m going for, some tracks might be percussion heavy some might be melody heavy. If it’s percussion heavy I always start with my kick once thats up I layer in everything and add everything making sure my percussion is the main star. If it’s melody based I start by writing a chord progression.

Any tips for young producers?

1) Your first tracks will suck so much, you’ll think they’re good but they actually really suck! don’t get above yourself and lose track of the competition out there, just keep working on your sounds.

2) Keep a day job until you are booked too much to hold one down. you have more freedom to produce when and what you want. This is a biggy!

3) I know you’re super excited to put your songs up on Soundcloud but just let them sit for a couple weeks. Learn to find flaws in your tracks. After a couple weeks if you’re still 100% happy with it by all means put it up but don’t get over eager and put up a track that could be that bit better.

4) No body ever got anywhere by half assing music. With producing easier to get into than ever just make sure you’re the guy who works the hardest.
